Buying a used foil: compatibility and checks

Updated 24.10.2026

A well-chosen used foil often costs half the new price and rides like day one. As long as the parts fit your gear, and nothing is cracked or seized.

Compatibility first

A foil has four parts: mast, fuselage, front wing and stabiliser. Between them there is no standard: every brand has its own fittings, and they sometimes change between generations.

  • Ask for the exact reference of each part and its generation or year.
  • Check the brand’s website for its compatibility chart.
  • For a single part, ask for a photo of the mounting area.

On the board side it is simpler: most wing and pump boards have two parallel tracks (often called “US box”). Some SUP or older boards use a Tuttle or Deep Tuttle box.

What front wing area?

The bigger the area (in cm²), the earlier and slower the foil takes off and the more stable it is; the smaller, the faster and livelier. Guidelines for wing foiling:

First sessions1,800 to 2,200 cm²
Rider already flying1,200 to 1,600 cm²
Speed, strong wind, waves800 to 1,100 cm²

For pump foiling and downwinding, high-aspect wings glide for a long time with little effort.

The mast: length and material

  • 60 to 75 cm for learning: you fall from lower.
  • 80 to 90 cm: the most versatile length.
  • 95 cm and more: more margin in chop and swell at sea.

An aluminium mast is cheaper and forgives knocks; a carbon mast is stiffer and lighter. A good used carbon mast is often an excellent deal.

Checks before buying

  • Leading and trailing edges: a small chip can be repaired, a crack through the carbon cannot.
  • Corrosion: aluminium and stainless steel in contact with carbon and salt water form white corrosion around bolts. After a North Sea session, rinsing in fresh water is a must.
  • Bolts and threads: assemble the foil in front of the seller.
  • Mast head and plate: no cracks, no play.
  • Mast straightness: lay it on a flat surface.
